Or a carpenter taking timber and making a table. Or a bicycle frame builder taking steel tubes and making a bike frame. Or a forester planting trees and restoring a forest. These are all examples of what I mean by generating wealth. They all involve human labour being applied to some kind of tangible resource.

Your point is well made, if the wealth generation involves the unsustainable use of resources, as most of the modern economy does then in the long run its doomed. And should not be thought of as generating wealth but of destroying it.irishwildeyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13653892284914268881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-72715338668006963512012-03-28T12:38:54.489-04:002012-03-28T12:38:54.489-04:00I hadn't heard that Stanhope bit...

It ...I often wonder about worker-to-retiree ratios. It strikes me that most workers in a modern economy produce f**k all and certainly don’t produce any wealth. There are actually a very small number of workers generating the wealth. Only those who work in things like farming, foresty, fishing, mining and manufacturing are actually generating wealth. The rest of us in the vast service sector are consumers of that wealth, all the office workers, musicians, hair dressers, police etc. We all live off the work of a very small number of people.

In the post peak oil economy a lot more of us are going to have start actually generating wealth as opposed to pushing papers around, playing music, cutting hair or policing. But this is a slightly different problem from the worker to retiree ratio as envisaged currently.irishwildeyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13653892284914268881noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-47095565435103833292012-03-28T08:07:48.230-04:002012-03-28T08:07:48.230-04:00It is, of course, not JUST a Baby Boomer problem, ...It is, of course, not JUST a Baby Boomer problem, but the Kotlikoff and Burns book was focused on the Boomers because of the population bulge and the fact that Gen-X and Gen-Y being much smaller was going to cause the worker-to-retiree ratio to drop dramatically.Bill Hickshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17551954408189665078noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-19247639256710733812012-03-28T07:58:30.895-04:002012-03-28T07:58:30.895-04:00So say that 1/4th the residents are 60 or older. Then in steady-state population, you'd expect 1/4 of them to be 60 or older. Why is this considered a "baby boomer" phenomenon?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-7743663396431075462012-03-28T07:22:08.616-04:002012-03-28T07:22:08.616-04:00Stanhope is brilliant; the drunker the better.
