The people (MGM) proposing another casino in Brimfield, MA, told everyone they intend to make their site accessible only from the MassPike, a concept that clearly contradicts any idea the traffic could benefit Brimfield or Palmer (or any other community for miles around). They claimed it would minimize the negative impact, although I can't see how they'd even really consider doing that. Why FORCE people to pay tolls to come to you? That's dumb. Logic says they really plan a surface-road access, to the detriment of the neighboring towns. They also claim to want to design something that combines casino and outdoors activities (hiking, etc), but that's equally unbelievable; if they actually cared about the local envir, they wouldn't build the damn thing at all.
Fortunately, there is an anti-casino effort here (my friend's an organizer, and was recently taped for Chronicle)....gusnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-9929494601805903032012-03-04T16:27:41.397-05:002012-03-04T16:27:41.397-05:00To me mind the liberalisation of gambling (in all ...To me mind the liberalisation of gambling (in all its forms including lotteries and the like) has been one of the most pernicious trends of the last generation or so. How many kids go hungry becuase their parents wasted their money on the slots? How much fraud and thievery is due to degenerate gamblers need to keep playing?

As for the so-called economic impacts on the community it's as rubbish as the figures trotted out to justify stadium construction. Virtually all of the money spent in casinos comes from the local people, and therefore isn't spent in other local businessea. It really is a shell game, and we're suckers to fall for it.Conradnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3862216000300765627.post-9457337841287526102012-03-04T09:36:05.921-05:002012-03-04T09:36:05.921-05:00Very sad story Bill, just shows how reluctant peop...Very sad story Bill, just shows how reluctant people are to face reality. This community is going to retry a failed formula rather than face facts and try to think of something new. I really do despair that we are ever going to get off the hook we are impaled on. How bad will things have to get before people are ready to really change?irishwildeyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13653892284914268881noreply@blogger.com
